How Do I Raise My Speaking Voice?

I’ve always been real soft-spoken and people have trouble hearing me. I don’t feel comfortable when I talk louder though, my voice just gets more shrill and nasally. What can I do?

    Believe it or not, breathing exercizes will help you begin to moderate your voice projection. One is when reclining place three or four moderately sized books on your stomach and take deep breaths slowly inhaling and exhaling. Watch the books rise and fall. This will teach you to breathe from the diaphram. Second take a short walk, perhaps a mile or so, down a sidewalk. Breathe in every five steps, slowly exhale for five steps. Continue for the duration of your walk. Be sure to breathe from the diaphram. Your shoulders should not rise when breathing.
    As you project your voice be sure to breath from the diaphram. Open your mouth widely. Lower your voice one octave. You can gain volume (loudness) without becoming shrill. Practice in front of a mirror. This will teach you poise as well as voice moderation. Good luck.

    1.) Get a handheld tape recorder, tape yourself doing steps 2 and 3 until you rid yourself of the shrill/nasally sound. 2.) To rid yourself of the nasal voice, plug your nose and practice speaking without the nasal sound (this takes a TON of practice..being from the mid west I KNOW!!) 3.) Diaphram exercises, such as singing from your “gut”, so to speak, will help you develop the muscles you need to project a proper speaking tone. This takes a TON of practice, but it works! I know, I went to public speaking and spokesmodel classes for the same thing. Good luck to you!! Be patient and keep practicing!

    Talk from you diaphragm – that is, do not try to force your vocal cords but let the diaphragm force air out through the lungs. By the way a nasal voice is when air is not going out through the nose.

    avoid carbonated drinks…that’s what my friends voice coach stressed to her all the time!

    Singing will help as long as you use your diaphragm. Put your hand on your stomach and you can tell if you are using your diaphragm or your throat when you talk. Practice speaking in a very low voice in the bathtub and get louder each time. Even if you don’t carry a tune, singing exercises help.

    try controlled yelling in the car by yourself with a voice recorder and listen to it later then compare

    Do what abraham lincoln did. He talked to animals in the barn. He actually practiced his speeches infront of animals. He was great speaker, I would give it a try.

    try to speak to a lot of people and try to chat with people on the topic in which u r excited and enthusiastic

    try working on posture, if you stand up tall head straight and shoulders back and concentrate on projecting your voice it may help.
