I have a document in MS Word, and my friend is afraid of anything non-Mac. Is she going to be able to open the document?
Thanks.

If she has OS 10.5 Leopard they come with the ability to read .doc and .docx right out of the box. Send it to her, she’ll be able to read it. You could also send it as a .txt
She “can use OS X’s built-in TextEdit to view, edit, and save files in a variety of formats:
? Plain Text (.txt)
? Rich Text Format (.rtf)
? Rich Text Format Directory (.rtfd)
? HTML (.html)
? Web Archive (.webarchive)
? Open Document (.odt)
? Microsoft Word 2007 (.docx)
? Microsoft Word 97 (.doc)
? Microsoft Word 2003 XML (.xml)
Files saved in formats other than plain text can include graphics, paragraph and font formatting, tables, and lists.
Most word processors can open RTF files. Microsoft Word can open the Word format files. TextEdit supports a number of Word features, including tables, but some other features may not be supported.”

TIP: Your friend should use this website to address her Mac / non-Mac fears. Most are unfounded.
She can use MS Word for Mac, Open Office for Mac, Neo Office and Mariner Write.
If she doesn’t want to install any software then convert the document to PDF format (which the Mac can view natively from OS X preview or quicklook) .
Tell her to get open office it’s like a share ware version of ms office. Then she can read and write office type docs.
