I recently got an update for my logicool camera which said I need to unplug my camera and disable my virus protection software before installation. I never had to do this before so I am a bit confused. Is this really necessary or could this be a type of trojan horse?

some poorly designed software will conflict with the antivirus
and may get bloceked because it needs to write to the kernal
most times you can ignore it and go past it leaving it on
but if you need to disable it then id recommend that you disconnect from the internet and install it reboot if needed and then reactivate the security suite/antivirus
then reconnect to the internet and you’re golden
That all depends on where you are getting the update from. If it is from the actual Logicool website, then yes, you can, but make sure you have your firewall up, just in case. If it does turn out to be a virus, you can just start your antivirus up again and it should catch anything that you picked up while you had it turned off.
Do a Create System Restore Point BEFORE the update.
I wouldnt disable virus while online.
If you can D/L the file – virus scan it and check it. If it comes up clear – what i would do is unplug the internet, install the update offline ( if it will ) just to be safe.
Don’t go back online until you turn virus protection back on and do a scan just to be certain nothing weird happened BEFORE you go online. That way you can isolate what caused problems if any show up.
And the System Restore can help you roll back to earlier if there are any problems.
