There are LOTS of free computer protection programs! You can check at http://reviews.cnet.com/software/ to search for any software you like. You will see Editor and Consumer reviews – and read them yourself to determine if they fit your needs.
However, there is no one BEST program for everyone! Each person’s individual computer usage is completely different. Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior. Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.
Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.
Here is a list of *FREE* programs that do their job well, for various security tasks. Most of the time, SEVERAL PROGRAMS ARE NECESSARY to maintain a full range of security/protection against viruses, trojans, worms, etc.
There is a safe site, with software reviews by both the editors and users at http://www.download.com Most of the following programs can be downloaded from there.
    ANTI-VIRUS:
    -AVG by Grisoft
    -Avira
    -Avast
Any *one* of these would probably work well for you! Read the reviews to be sure.
    ANTI-SPYWARE:
Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100 percent accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need *at least* two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.
There are several excellent free ones:
    -Spybot, Search and Destroy
    -Ad-Aware
    -Spyware Blaster
    -Superantispyware
    -Malwarebytes
    FIREWALL:
    -Comodo
    -Online Armor
    -SandBoxie
    -Sunbelt Personal Firewall (formerly Kerio)
    -Zone Alarm
    GENERAL CLEANING:
    -Ccleaner
    HTH!

norton 360 mainly provides: Antivirus, antispyware, firewall and its intrusion prevention system (HIPS) – though there are few more random features.
If you want to cover all that, I suggest the following build:
    1) Avira or Avast as your AV/antispyware
    2) Comodo Firewall, PC tools or Online armour as firewall
    3) Superantispyware, Malwarebyte anti-malware as your complementary scanners to your AVs.
    4) Threatfire, DSA or geswall as your HIPS
Other free builds that you may want to add on top of the build suggested:
    5) OpenDNS – free filtering and phishing protection
    6) Sandboxie – isolation program (very good!) – wont need geswall if you’re using this.
    7) WOT/linkscanner – web surfing security
    8) Keyscrambler – anti-keylogger

AVG and Malwarebytes, make sure the system is healthy first before installing any type of security. If not you risk the infections compromising the security program, which could lead to false positives, and or not detecting the issues at hand.
Detecting and removing infections is very tough and dangerous. You risk data loss and you risk making the system worse. Because of the risks I recommend letting a professional help you.

i have had Avast antivirus for 2 years and its great!! defiantly recommend it!!
if you want you could go to cnet’s download .com and look for a review on it.
    hope it helps!!

Avast or Avira, AVG free edition has no rootkit protection.
For firewalls, you could try Online Armor or Comodo.

Avira AntiVir Personal is the best free Anti virus software for free.
you may download it from http://www.free-av.com/

  7. Get Avast Home User it is splendid. Avira has a lot of updates. Avg is useless and slow!
