I am pregnant scheduled to visit the U.S and have insurance that can activate a travelers insurance component. Does this mean that if I get into difficulties with my pregnancy before I return home it will cover my medical expenses.

You will have to check with your insurance company. My insurance company covered emergencies and would cover a pregnancy if you were hospitalized (for any reason) or just in the ER with a threatened miscarriage. If you are hospitalized, you are generally required to contact your insurance company and let them know. They may choose to have you moved to another hospital if their US partner has negotiated deals with another hospital in the same city.
Many people go to ERs for what is clearly non-life threatening illness, but something that does require treatment. However, being a stranger, you don’t know where to find a clinic that you can go to THAT DAY. I was fortunate, when I was in London. The bobby pointed out a clinic where I could get stitches. No ER charge. The visit would not have been covered by the insurance company because 7 stitches is not at all life-threatening. Yet, it did require repair and I’m not Rambo doing field surgery on myself.
To put in shorter terms, your travel coverage protects you against catastrophic costs.
