I know many photographers use Photoshop. I’ll only be editing photos and I’m not sure that I need all that Photoshop offers.

That’s what Photoshop is ALL about!! Editing Photos!! You don’t have to have the latest and greatest editions with all the bells and whistles… Photoshop Elements is reasonably priced. You could probably find 7.0 for a good price, too. I couldn’t imagine trying to do a good job editing images WITHOUT Photoshop. You can spend less on another program, but in the end it will cost you more when you decide that you should have gotten Photoshop and give in and get it…
Just my honest opinion… Photoshop gives you the best tools to make your images the best they can be. Learn what the program can do and how to use it. You won’t be sorry! ;o)
Just get Photoshop Elements then. If you shoot correctly, like one of the other posters mentioned, you’ll have less of a need for an editor at all. I don’t use a lot of things (Partly because of the inconvenience at the moment). I just up my saturation and contrast, and sometimes watermark. I use the editor that came with my system, which is of suprisingly excellent quality. Photoshop can also be used to get more creative and artsitic with your photos.
There’s also The Gimp, which has many of the features found in Photoshop, plus it’s free and will teach you the basics of photo editing.
Happy shooting!
If you shoot correctly there is very very very little need for a photo editor at all. Any prog that can resize, crop and place a watermark on an image is good enough.
Start with Photoshop Elements … under $90
If you want to explore the world of Adobe Photoshop without spending the big money for the full product, get Photoshop Elements. It is a tremendously powerful program and it only sells for $99.00. You can get it at http://www.adobe.com or any of the usual places you buy software. I am still using Photoshop Elements 5.0, but PE 6.0 is now out and Adobe claims that it has enhanced Brightness/Contrast tools, Clone tool and Black and White Conversion tool. The other enhancements seem to deal with merging photos (panoramic stitching) and organizing your photos.
You can use it practically right out of the box with the “Quick Fix” option and then you can advance into the full program, learning TONS about the Photoshop world as you go. Frankly, I think most casual users would never explore the full capabilities of Photoshop Elements. If you are ever ready for more, you will already know much of what you need to know about using “real” Photoshop.
Just go here http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshope… and click “Free Trial” for a 30-day free trial.
Almost every single image on my Flickr site was processed with Photoshop Elements 5.0. Some have from zero to barely any post-processing at all and others have considerable amount of perspective alterations, saturation changes, etc., and these are specified under the picture most of the time. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei…
Here’s a friend’s “before” picture:
…………Yahoo! will not let me include this link, but there is a link to the original under my Flickr image…………
There is not a lot he could have done at the scene to make it better. I mean, when the sun sets – there are shadows.
Here’s my “after” version created with “only” Photoshop Elements 5.0: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei…
This is not a “great” job, but it shows that Photoshop Elements is not just a toy.
Someone here said that Amazon has P.E. 6.0 for $61 now.
