What Should The Punishment Be For A Family Member Who Assist In Suicide Of Terminally Ill?

A father, dying of cancer, is suffering a lot of pain. He asks his son to “kill” him which he does and is convicted of murder. The judge is trying to determine the appropriate sentence to impose in this case from a permissible range of 15 years to life. If the judge believes that the goal of punishment should be deterrence, what factors should he consider?

  1. Common Sense says:

In my opinion he should get 1 day in jail.

  2. Lynn says:

I find it highly unlikely that the son in this situation would be convicted of murder. At most, it would be manslaughter, if not some lesser offense. A sentence of 15 years to life is inappropriate given these facts, and deterrence wouldn’t be effective.

  3. In my opinion assisted suicide should be legal, so the punishment would be nothing.
Makes me sick that whenever an animal is suffering and sick beyond repair we allow it a peaceful death but deny humans that same right.
