Are Software Programs Like Visualhub And Isquint Safe To Put On My Computer?

I want to put my own DVDs onto my iPod Video but apparently that’s piracy. I’ve read about software called VisualHub and iSquint that you can download for free, and that converts the videos, but I don’t want to get a virus on my new Macbook. Does anyone know if there is any danger there? Thanks.
