How is it any different than other methods of language learning, if it is? Is it worth the big pricetag? If you’ve used it, did it live up to it’s claims to be the best/easiest way to learn a language?

NO, if anything it is worse than other methods. Who says it is better — is it the ad blitz that RS uses? Gee, I wonder if they are trying to see more copies (at their outrageous prices…)
The program will teach vocabulary, and recognition of generic (non-culture specific) pictures. You will learn like a parrot learns. Communicative skills are scarce, so I would keep looking.
There is a saying “Caveat emptor” — let the buyer beware. which is perfect in this case.

For the most part it is the Rosetta company itself that makes this claim. It waters down the grammar, a basic and most important tool for learning a language. You won’t become fluent or have an intelligent conversation in another language using the Rosetta Stone.
