I bought a sheet music book, and it is for piano/vocals/guitar. It is set up just like regular sheet music, and it says the chords for the guitar, but it only tells me the chords. How do I know how many times to play a certain chord in order for the music to sound right.

when i play my guitar with piano sheet music it usually only has the chords, and I have to choose what goes along with the song best. the chords tell you what the left hand does, but you have to figure out the right hand (or left if you play lefty) yourself.
Really you just need to listen and decide what you think sounds right. There’s more than one version of every song, and more than one way to play it. The cool thing about guitar is that you have a lot of say in how you want the song to sound because you can change the strumming pattern to a more simplified version if you’re having trouble with it, or whatever you want, really. Follow the basic rhythm and do whatever you want!
Edit: I agree with the guy below me (well, and above).. I find it more difficult to try to time things out with the notes, though, because that’s not an exact science or anything. I find that that makes me play more robotically and it doesn’t really help. You can certainly try it, but I think you’re best off just feeling the rhythm.
there are essentially two possible ways, one you can listen to the song and listen for the strum of the guitar. If you don’t have the song, you can look it up on YouTube, and listen to it there, somebody always posts songs there.
The second it try reading the notes on the line. Not necessarily the notes as in a scale, but for the rhythm of the notes, like if the notes are half notes, whole, quarter, eighth etc. For half notes strum once, maybe twice, as well as whole notes, and for quarter and eighth notes and beyond, one strum per note is sufficient.
otherwise, just play with the song and the chords, and see what feels right.
I hope this helps, and doesn’t really confuse you.
Sheet music always has some faults, i don’t get why everyone don’t makes it in same way.
You will have to play it as it’s written, And it depends upon you how many times you want to play same chords.
Simple, It depends upon the song which you are playing.
It’s written in any real sheet.
As many times as it’s written, I used to play only if it was required, Otherwise not, Also depends upon which kind of sheet you have.
As much as it’s needed.
You will have to figure it by yourself.
It will be decided by you.
