How Can I Create My Own Version Of Mario 3?

I tried game maker and it doesnt seem to work on vista, at least not to my knowledge. Anyone ever do this or know of a program that you can recomend? It doesnt matter how complex the program is. Also freeware would be nice.

    There’s the fix for GM7 and Vista.
    Other than that, try Adobe Flash. Flash is commonly used for prototyping games.
    If you want full, full control, try http://www.pygame.org/news.html. It’s a 2D game engine for use with the Python whitespace-based scripting language
