What Would Cause A Cd Rom Drive On A Laptop To Play Music Cds Fine, But Not Recognize Cd-rom Software?

The laptop is a Compaq Presario running Windows ME. The CD-ROM drive was loading software just fine a couple of months ago, but now when you put a CD-ROM into the drive, it says, “Insert CD”, even though there is already one in there, and you can’t access the files on the drive. Music CDs, however, play with no problems whatsoever. I already cleaned the lens of the drive. Is there a simple setting that needs to be changed? Is the drive itself malfunctioning?
If you need any additional information, let me know in your answer. I will post additional details periodically.

Usually data CD’s have an autorun feature and once inserted into the drive they should start the installation process of whatever program you are trying to install. Sometimes autorun does not work so normally you would try and start the process of using Explorer to find a file like setup.exe and then double click the filename.
