The dogs that you can adopt in a shelter are tested for temperament and they will not let someone with a child adopt a dog with a bad temperament against them. You can find almost any kind of dog in a shelter. A lot of times they are shutting down puppy mills and the puppies end up in shelters. all you have to do is look for your breed. I got a Full bred Shih Tzu that is the sweetest dog you will ever meet. They said they found her as a stray with her sister and she doesn’t act like she was abused at all. I don’t think she was. I think she may have just been lost by someone.
Chantal that was not adopting a dog that was buying one from a petstore.

Children are adopted, dogs are bought and sold. I prefer buying from reputable breeders than buying from shelters.
Edit: The TDs fairies are out tonight!

It is a matter of personal choice to be honest and there are differant challenges with each choice. Yes with a puppy you can train him or her in behavior that you find acceptable in your home .Bear in mind that you will have to invest some time to get it right and if you don’t then it will become very much more cumbersome to get right later. Many people do not realize what it involved with training a puppy so make sure you have the time .
With a rescue dog you are never quite sure of its past and also it may have behaviors that would be undesirable. once again if you have the time you can work on changing those behaviors. Just remember that all dogs were once puppies and the ones in the shelters are usually the so called “problem dogs” that are only there because people did not educate themselves first on how to rear a puppy. Its not that they were irresponsible its just that they did not know what was in store.

Adopt because when you buy-yes you are getting a cute little puppy-but when you adopt you help out a puppy who as it gets older may not get a family and know what it’s like to be loved so it’s better to save a pup than to buy one that you know will get a home!!!

Adopting always! And even if you adopt a puppy from a shelter you will get info if they are good with children or not (most pups are fine because they are young) and what breeds they might be & if they are a purebred what to expect and such. Anyway, I will always adopt from shelters or rescue groups & don’t plan on buying from a breeding any time soon if at all (the only time I would actually even possibly consider buying from a breeder would be years & years & years from now & I would only get a Beaucron puppy because they are very rarely in shelters & I love the breed dearly) because there are so many dogs & pups in shelters waiting for forever homes and if you want a puppy or dog why not rescue one and give them a good home?
Oh & I also wanted to mention that puppies, of all sizes & ages, pop up in shelters & rescue groups all the time and not all dogs in shelters are mistreated or abused yes some are but many times dogs are given up due to financial issues, moving, not enough time or stupid reasons. And most of the pups in shelters are because of unwanted litters that where born because some stupid owner didn’t spay their dog.

I do agree with you that it is nice to know what kind of dog you are getting, but you have to realive that mostly all the dogs that are up for adoption have been mistreeted, and saving a dog that need a person to love it and care for it is the best thing a person can do…

This is really a personal question. With Joe, our BT, I wanted a puppy. I’ve never really had a puppy before and wanted to experience it all. Now with us wanting to get another dog, we’re looking at going through a rescue.

some answers people give are stupid. There are beautiful dogs at shelters yes they have been mistreated neglected etc.If u show these dogs tlc they will love u back. Have u seen dog breeders breed it is 4 financial gain the moma body does not have time to heel before she is pregnant again when she is unable to breed anymore she is killed and disposed of as trash.Get a dog from the shelter u can train any dog yourself and its not hard i got a pure mastif pup from the shelter he to was mistreated even in the shelter and he is the best dog i dont ever worry bout anyone causing harm to myself or my child.

I’d prefer to buy one only because as a dog owner myself it’s easier to train a dog when they are young, and you get more bonding when you grow with them.

My dog was purchased from a professional dog kennel and is the best present ever. We’ve tried rescue dogs but in all cases it was a mistake.

I have very specific requirements when acquiring a dog, so on the rare occasion I get an outside dog, I purchase one. If I were simply seeking a companion or when people contact me looking for a general pet, I always suggest they start with rescue groups first.

It would cost less to go to the pound and adopt a puppy. There is always a large selection — and many are put to sleep every day. People who have had dogs lose their jobs and homes and have to give up their pets. Pets are allowed to roam — there are litters of unwanted animals unwanted that are dumped and destroyed. On the Today show this morning was a story about how the registered animals are inbreed and the result is major problems –that don’t always show up right away.
A local shelter has new animals all the time –some with papers –left behind for many reasons — death or the master — or move to an apartment that doesn’t allow pets — or a lot of other reasons.
The main thing –when you get a pet, have it neutered –and do not add to the over population of animals. Train your pet and take care of it — with regular visits to the vet.

I’ve done both and had better experience with buying dogs with papers. The worst experience I had with adoption was at Petco. They told me the puppy was eight weeks old and a mixed breed. AT the first vet visit I found out she was only five weeks and a pure pit. I like pits but have children so I had to sell her to a neighbor.

  16. buy cause then you can raise it the way you want to, otherwise u could get a ****** up dog that would go crazy

    Dogs are purchased
    Children are adopted.
Be it you get a dog from a Breeder, Shelter or Rescue, you are paying money to buy the dog. As personal property that is how things work.
So, the correct terminology is to say you bought your dog, then state from where you purchased it
I like to know what I am getting. I bought my last dog from a reputable breeder and will only do that in the future.
I have an Akita I bought from a rescue though
As well as three dogs who were taken in from bad situations.
The best way to go is buy a dog from a reputable breeder.
