Does Any-one Know Of A Natural Alternative To Aripiprazole Taken For Schizophrenia?

I have been taking abilify (aripiprazole) for about 4 years but want to find a natural alternative to alleviate symptoms of pychosis related to schizophernia, I have researched that Rhodiola Rosea, Pulsatilla, Anacardium, opium and/or sepia could be useful does any-one know any more about this?

  1. The only natural product I know of with any evidence of benefit is N-acetyl cysteine. It works by increasing levels of glutathione levels in the cerebral spinal fluid. Patients with schizophrenia have been shown to have a glutathione deficiency which could possibly exacerbate (make worse) symptoms associated with the disorder. Glutathione is an antioxidant enzyme involved in many cellular processes in the body. One small trial showed modest improvement in assessment scales when patients used N-acetyl cysteine vs. patients using placebo. More evidence is being conducted to further prove effectiveness and safety of use in these patients.
The other agents you have mentioned have no clinical evidence of benefit when used for this purpose. As a future pharmacist my general rule of thumb concerning natural products in treating significant disorders or illness is this; a.) If there was significant benefit of a natural product a pharmaceutical company would have patented a product and done trials to get it approved by the FDA. b.) If there is potential benefit of these products, they generally have to be used in such large doses to be therapeutically effective that they cause more side effects than the prescription medications patients want to discontinue. Just because something is “natural” does not necessarily mean it is without side effects. I hope this helps :)
