I heard that you can play ps2 games on a ps3 but then only some. Someone told me there is software online you can download to make it compatible so you can play all games.

Never heard of that one before, but i doubt that it will be possible.
I depends on the ps2 game you are trying to play as well as the model of ps3 you have. You can indeed download software updates for certain models of ps3 that will help.
