First thing is to probably learn the basic chords & importantly your guitar.
This gives the firm base of guitar learning.
After you mastered those – try learning more complex chords yet not too hard.
Learn at your own pace, so you don’t get too frustrated.
    It takes time & patience.
If your going to be self-taught,
try buying some guide books on guitar playing.
    If not,
taking guitar lessons is not a bad option either.
At least there, you have someone to ask for practical help.
    Hope this helps!
Good luck on your learning & don’t get too frustrated!
    Don’t give up!. :)

The history of the guitar is over 400 years old. Many different styles and techniques have arisen over time. No one could master the instrument on their own. You wouldn’t want a self taught doctor or pilot would you? Music is just as deep as any other human undertaking. People who object to lessons either have had bad teachers, or feel like they already know everything there is to know, and can’t be bothered to learn from another person. Every great guitarist has had someone at some time teach them the basics. Most self taught players hold the guitar wrong, and choke the neck with their palms touching it and move their fingers in inefficient and awkward ways. To a professional it’s almost painful to watch, and you will not even be considered to be hired to play with them. Talent is NOT enough. Without knowledge you will just spin in circles and will never reach your potential. You can always choose which of that knowledge to use or to ignore. But you can’t make choices when you don’t even know what they are, Take Lessons! Do it for years and years. You will kick butt…

I really like instructional videos for electric guitar. They are way cheaper than private lessons and way more effective than learning from your buddies.

There are very few things in life as rewarding as learning to play a musical instrument, and there are even fewer things as beautiful as an electric guitar. However, learning to play the guitar takes a lot of patience and can be very frustrating at times. While it’s very important that you stick to some sort of structure if you want to make good progress, it’s just as important that you learn an easy song every now and then so you don’t feel like you’re going nowhere slowly.
Most how to play electric guitar for beginners articles offer a step-by-step guide, including steps such as “buy a guitar”, “learn the chords” which quite frankly are pretty redundant if you ask me. The most valuable advice I could give someone learning to play the guitar is to be patient, find some type of course (there are tons online now, stick to the free versions until you’re 100% sure you want to learn how to play the electric guitar) so you avoid making long-term mistakes, and learn a new song every now and then.
Learning to play the electric guitar is exactly the same as learning to play the acoustic/classical guitar with the exception that the steel strings hurt your fingers and the fact that it’s electric. It’s advisable that you begin learning on a nylon string guitar first, but it’s up to you.
While learning how to play electric guitar for beginners there are a few picking songs to try that I learnt in my beginner stages, and I’ll list them below for you to have a look at. When learning to play the guitar it’s important that you follow a structured lesson plan, and there are plenty of online courses available, rather stick to the free versions though until you’re sure about learning to play the guitar.
