I have had Norton antivirus software on my computer for around 2 years and all of a suddent this week my computer has been getting popups and freezing every so often. Could this have anything to do with not defragmenting my computer and freeing up disk space and using my disk cleanup and defragmenting? I haven’t done it on my computer since I go it and I have had it for about 2-3 years. I am hoping defrag and disc cleanup will solve the problem. Does anyone know?
Thak you

Hi gator,
This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.
You should definitely run the Windows utilities and make sure that you are not running out of hard drive space and that your hard drive is not failing. You should also run Windows Update and make sure that you have all of the Microsoft patches applied. The symptoms you describe can also be caused by an infection on your system.
Since you have a subscription to Norton AntiVirus, you should make sure you have the latest version installed, which is the 2010 version. A subscription to a Norton product entitles you to free product updates for the life of your subscription so that you always have the latest new features and protection against the latest threats. To update to the latest version, please visit the Norton Update Center at the link below.http://updatecenter.norton.com/
Once you have updates to the latest version of Norton AntiVirus, open the application and manually run LiveUpdate to ensure you have the latest updates applied. NOTE: the “LiveUpdate” and “Pulse Updates” features will run automatically going forward. Next, complete a “Full System Scan” with Norton AntiVirus 2010 to check for infections. If no infections are found, you may also restart your computer into Windows Safe Mode and complete another “Full System Scan” to check for infections.
Thank you,
Mike

The most common cause of computer freezes is a corrupt registry.
Corruption within your registry keys, registry classes, and registry settings are the most common causes of Windows error messages.
The Computer registry is a database that stores all of your computer
settings. The computer registry becomes more complex as you use your computer. The more programs you use the greater the chance your
computer registry will develop errors and become bloated over time. Without cleaning the registry on a regular basis it is very likely that your PC will freeze.
Cleaning the Windows registry improves the performance of your computer and will reduce the number of PC freezes. The Registry cleaner cleans the registry and frees up Windows registry space.
Completely clean your windows registry with a few clicks of the mouse

If the problem is not running too many programs at once then it is most likely due to your registry. This is the area where computer errors most often occur. The registry communicates information between the software, hardware, and drivers. When there are errors it can cause your computer to freeze up.
