I work for a small service company and I am interested in developing our own mailing list data base of current and former customers. We would like to be able to sort on several fields and print mailing labels. We do not intend to use anything like mail-merge.

Since it is a small company, your best bet would be to develop this data base using Microsoft Access.
It is very easy to use, and there are plenty of manuals on how to use Access in the market.
The reports (or labels) for printing are highly customizable (they are dreamy actually).
If you would like me to develop it for you, I would be sooo happy to do it!!! I am employed, but I love doing small projects like this on the side…. But I do encourage you to learn Access. It is a great tool included in Microsoft Office Pro.
God Bless.
