Free and excellent is OpenOffice writer. The whole office suite is free and is available for download at http://www.openoffice.org. Try it and I am sure you will love it. It has everything you could possible need in a word processor / Office suite and more. It will certainly work on your Vista machine.
I am sure there will be advice that Microsoft Office is the best, but its all a matter of opinion, personal taste and what each individual is used to. The fact is you pay top price for a product that you can get at least comparable product for free. You don’t have to pay high price for good computing products, there are many open source software that are just as good.
Cheers and happy computing
There three best word processors available today are: Word, (which is part of Microsoft Office.) Cost is around $250 to $450. Corel Word Perfect. More or less the same price as MS Office. and Last, Open Office, (form Sun Micro Systems), which is free.
Since you say you only need a word processor for general use, I would suggest “Open Office”. You can download it from: http://www.openoffice.org
If you choose Open Office, and I suggest you do, just save you documents with a file extension of either “.doc”, or “.rtf”. This will allow all other word processors to open and display you documents.
Open Office also comes with a spread sheet program, and more. It is a complete set of office productivity tools. I think you’ll really like it, and of coarse the price is right.
i still believe that microsoft word is the best there is. if microsoft office is not great, then why would sun create the free openoffice based on microsoft office and make it work with microsoft office at the same time? i think people want to use something that is of value, rather than something that is free. a reason openoffice might be free, bec no one really needs it.
buy something of value!
abiword is a much smaller download than open office and a great word processor; free herehttp://www.filehippo.com/download_abiwor…
you can also get star office free with google packhttp://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_inst…
if you need a full-featured suite, try IBM Lotus Symphony as an alternative to Open Officehttp://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus…
Another one you could try is Jarte, it’s easy to use and compatible with windows, and it’s free.http://www.jarte.com/index.html
Open office it is free
i personally like MS office but open office is good tohttp://openoffice.org-suite.com/
