its just a simple game but i would assume that other programs are better than others. i used to play chessmaster 5000 (i think) when i was little that was pretty fun, but now im getting back into it and i want to learn the ways of destroying people at the game. do some programs have exercises; which ones are better than others? lets say my budget is $50.

chessmaster is pretty good. don’t expect to crush anyone anytime soon. it takes years and years of hard work(and many games). chess is NOT a simple game, one mistake and YOU are the one that’s destroyed
If your budget is $50, you might as well go with the latest version of Chessmaster, it has good tutorials.
Chess Mentor is a nice teaching software, You can check it out at http://www.chessmentor.com/
Chess Mentor is not a chess-playing software program. It’s a tutorial on different aspect of the game and it quizzes you about different situations. If you don’t know the answer right off the bat, you can ask for a hint, and a second hint, before it gives you the answer. Versions are available for under $50, but you’d have to check them out yourself to see if they’d help you.
You need to learn about tactics at your level, so look for chess sites that emphasize tactical ideas.
With that budget sounds like you need free programshttp://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html
You’ll need an interface. Winboard came with gnuchess installed.
No, they are not the strongest programs. (I estimate them at about 1600 USCF.)
Chessmaster’s good, I have it. Just keep playing higher level opponents until you get beaten, then drop down a level when you do. You’ll improve with time.
Chessmaster 11 is good for learning I have it.
