I’m interested in learning how to put content on the web, like if I would want to start my own website. I want to see if I can learn website design and all the coding, etc. needed to create a website. What software would I want to use? Is there a textbook or manual I should buy too? Thanks.

There are a lot of programs out there but I personally recommend Microsoft Front Page or HTML.
Can you use notepad? Then you have all the software you need to create a website. You need to learn HTML if you just want to put static content on a website. You need to use Javascript if you want to make your website dynamic.
You can use a WYSIWYG program like frontpage if you don’t want to bother mastering the subject and just want a generic website. You can also improve the control and functionality of a website by learning a server-side language like PHP, also SQL if you want to store a permanent database.
Of course this all assumes you have a host as well. There are plenty of places willing to host your website if you want to look for them.
PS: here’s a good place to start learning to code a web pagehttp://www.w3schools.com/
Actually, you can create quite awesome website with Photoshop, including rollover effects.
Buy a book on basic HTML. Start there, HTML is the foundation, everything else just enhances what you create.
After you are familiar with HTML, buy a book on BASIC Java, learning JAVA would be the the next step after HTML…after that…graphics
