It’s hard to know whether some random bit of security software is genuinely secure, because from a distance bad security looks almost exactly the same as good security.
Zip file passwords, for example, were relatively easy to crack last time I checked – though it will protect the files against casual snooping. On the other hand, if programs need access to the files, Zip is not a good solution.
If you’re serious about defending your data, consider something like truecrypt, which is free and open source. It allows you to create a large file on your disk, which is then encrypted and presented to the computer as if it were a new disk. Copy the files into that “disk”.
You need to enter a passphrase to allow unencrypted access to the “disk”, which will remain accessible until it is “unmounted” or the computer is switched off.
