What Software Do You Use To Design And Slice Webpages? Any Best Practices Tips?

I’ve been doing web development on the programming side for years now, and am just starting to get into designing and slicing XHTML myself instead of working with a separate designer. I’ve had luck using both Fireworks and Photoshop to do it, and I see certain advantages and disadvantages to using each program. Which program do you think is the best? Any tips for how to use your program of choice and why you think it’s the best? Is there something other than Fireworks or Photoshop that you would recommend?
