This is with special reference to the software called Audacity, used for music manipulation. People say it’s really good, but I’ve also read that spyware etc. can attach itself to many software downloads. And I haven’t heard of Audacity that much, so I don’t know if I can trust it. Is there any way to make sure?

The “home” of Audacity is Source Forge which is a well respected and trusted site for downloading. I’d be very surprised if you downloaded something from Source Forge and found it had a virus in it.
That said, you are wise to consider the safety of downloading. There are various sites that no one would argue over the safety of and I have links to some of those sites in my profile. It’s not an exhaustive list, just a few I could come up with at the time that are reputable.
When looking for one of those sites and you can’t quite remember the address, always google it – Source Forge is sourceforge.net and if anyone ever took out sourceforge.org, that could be a dangerous site. (For all I know, Source Forge may own that name – download.com were smart and bought downloadS.com as well which means no one can use that name to pretend to be them and hand out shonky software.) The price of domain names is low enough that it’s worth it to people to set up a fake organisation and buy a .org domain name – people think all .org sites are safe but I’ve seen some that are nothing but spam and one that even had pornography and dangerous downloads.
Here is a link to Audacity:http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Yes, Audacity is good.
I use CNet Download for most programs.http://www.download.com/windows/
They are safe and reliable.
If you have an Anti-Virus program like AVG or Avast, after you have downloaded the Audacity file do not Run it. Find the file and right click on it. You get an option to Scan the file with your Anti-Virus program.
If it is OK then Run it to install the software.
Audacity is safe, but for most software, just search the software name on the web and see what people are saying about it, or download it off reliable sites (e.g. sourceforge.net, etc.)
Also check the software once you’ve downloaded it by scanning it with a decent antivirus program (i.e. pretty much anything except Norton Antivirus)
Always research what your going to download, read user comments before download, and always scan your downloads with an anti-virus, like Avast or AVG…
I use Audacity, it’s pretty good, and nothing’s destroyed my computer yet…
Audacity is safe i checked it out.
