How Do I Configure A Wireless Connection Without The Router Software?

I have tried to configure my computer to a new network, but can not do so.
1. I am aware of the fact that I can’t have windows AND the wireless software both activated.
2. I unclick the “Use Windows to configure my wireless settings” box, however, the router software installed is for a Linksys router and I am now trying to connect to a Netgear router.
3. I don’t have the software CD for the Netgear.
4. When I first connected to this network, my brother was able to somehow connect me to the Netgear router without the software (he’s a comp. geek). Problem is, I moved and went back to Linksys and now I am back and need to connect to Netgear.
I can’t find my answer in any other article about this topic, please help!!!
Oh, and I tried to remove the linksys software, but can’t find it on my computer. I have no idea what to do…..thanks for any help.

If you have Windows XP… its most likely better to use the Wireless Zero Config Service built into Windows. If not, you might consider using the software that came with the wireless adapter (the thing you put into your computer, not the router).
The software (linksys) is most likely for the linksys adapter… which *should* be able to connect to ANY router. The software is meant to configure only the wireless adapter, not the router.
Your problem might not be your computer after all. Are any other computers on the network without a hitch? How about security? If secuirity is turned on in the router (WPA, WEP, TKIP, etc), then you won’t be able to connect to the router at all until you setup security on the PC end.
My suggestion: get a ethernet cord and setup your router… make sure you know it well enough that when you connect the adapter, you’ve got all the info ready. Then, go wireless.
I hope you get it to work!

You can’t. If you have a linksys router go to http://kbserver.netgear.com/downloads_su…

First, did you replace the Linksys Wireless adaptor back to the Netgear adaptor in the PC? Usually adaptors are not compatible with other company wireless.
Don’t worry about the Linksys software.. it will not work without Linksys hardware.
Without the software, you need to run Windows. You need to access the Router through an IP. What you need to do is go to the Netgear website (one is included at the end) and find out the default IP address to the model Router you are using and the proper way to get your router working.
Remember to use the Run command and get to the command prompt and use ipconfig or ?winipcfg? depending which Windows you are using.

In reply to your comment, go to Run and type “cmd” (without the quotes)
That will give you the command prompt to then do “ipconfig”
