I understand the basic information about internet piracy, including the software necessary to commit such actions, but the one thing that is still confusing me is the file names such as .RAR that are associated with the ISO Software files.
If anyone could help explain this to me, it would be well appreciated.

Um, let me see, you can google for .rar, right? So, google.
There is a lot of free, legal software available for Linux, or even for wndows.
For example, openoffice.org does everything that MS office does, but is free for download, both Win and Linux. No need to steal.
with live CD’s you can even run the stuff on your computer without installing on the HD.
