Can A Person Not Having Copyright Version Of Windows, Update His Software Using Windows Update?

I have heard that if the OS is Windows XP, etc and a person tries to update any software from the Windows update, his OS gets corrupted and the PC starts giving problems later. The existing software is verified by Windows through internet while updating and makes the system go haywire afterwards. Similar case is with Norton Antivirus, Internet Explorer, etc. Please confirm my apprehensions and what are the solutions for this?

If you have a copy of the operating system that is registered to another party, and you try to update it, Microsoft will know.
What will they do about your bootleg copy? Do you really want to find out?
The only solution is to acquire a copy of the software, with the key. Otherwise an 800 pound gorilla is gonna jump up and down on your puter.
