Why Is Video Editing Software Prone To Crashing?

I have had many computer and many video editing software and all the software seems to crash so easily, by clicking to many times and other things.
At the moment i have a top range computer
including quad core and 4gb ram and ati raedon 2400HD
Which is plenty for this type of softeware.
All my freinds have had the same problem that it just deicded to crash.
What is the reason behind this?
