Sounds like the site you downloaded from was buggy, and didn’t send the correct file type/name information, so your browser suggested the save name as the save script’s name.
Try renaming the file to some known media format extensions, e.g. .mpg, .mp4, .qt, .rm, .wmv , etc. and see if anything will open them. Or, open the file in a text editor to see if there’s a readable header telling you what format it is. There are automated methods to identify some file types, search for “magic numbers”
php files aren’t videos, they’re internet scripts, so recheck whether you have a video or not. If ya, try VLC player or mplayer
