I’m very cheap so I installed only freeware softwares to protect my computer.
I have:
- Avast! Antivirus
- Ad-Aware by Lavasoft
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- ZoneAlarm Firewall
- I also have CCleaner
They’re all working out great and they’re all free…and to think I used to waste my money on internet/computer security!
What softwares can I add to my collection? Or am I good? Remember it has to be free if you make any suggestions! lol
If you want my combination here it is:
Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Could be better
Zone Alarm – not as good as it used to be

Also use WinPatrol 2009:http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html
And finally, add Web of Trust to your browser:http://www.mywot.com
I have all the ones you have also, and yes they all have the free versions I’ve used for years. I also use AVG anti virus software, You can get a copy at download.com. Avast and grisoft pick up worms and viruses, sometimes one finds one quicker than the other. Zone labs is an awesome firewall. You are a smart person. I’m not sure of the CCleaner, what’s that for?
Yeah, that is pretty good.
Im not familiar with all of those products, just make sure none of them are doing the same job, for example your antivirus might also have some type of firewall. If you have 2 security systems doing the same job, it can cause some weird problems down the line.
I’m pretty confident that you are very well protected, but I would suggest getting MalwareByte’s Anti-malware, it finds loads of stuff in the registry, the only bad thing is you can’t schedule scans with the free version.
I admire your quest to use free software. However, like millions of others, none of this would be necessary if you didn’t limit yourself to using Windows.
Wouldn’t it be great to use an operating system that didn’t need any of this extraneous stuff?
Avira
Super-anti spyware
Malwarebytes anti-malware
All free. google them :p
All that software you have is useless to protect you. If you’ve made it this far without being infected, then you’re just lucky.
It’s better to stop thinking “antivirus” programs will protect you.
Instead you should:
1. Set up and use almost exclusively a limited user account.http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/arc…
2. Google the phrase “social engineering” and read the first five results.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22…
3. Install Windows updates automatically.http://www.updatexp.com/windows-automati…
4. Use Firefox with the NoScript extension.https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon…
5. Turn off autorun in Windows:http://www.microsoft.com/technet/securit…
6. Don’t pirate music, movies, or software
