I have lots of videos on my computer all in various different formats requiring different codec’s.
I wish to know what software I would require to convert all my videos which will allow me to watch them on my Archos 504.
I may consider purchasing the optional codec’s that Archos offer but would I really need them?
I don’t mind paying for this software as long as its not a complete rip off.
Many thanks

There are lotsa open source programs that can do that. Most every Movie Production Set uses it. BeOS is the strongest in that category, but Linux has way more Editors,Convertors.
I use Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake and Ubuntu 6.10 Edgey Eft as OSs that have pre-installed and configured software for that.
Know what? its free. Has been for years. Some Linux Distros are on a black list, they merged with Corporations for $, that is ok, but it is against the MIT,FSF Standards.
There is lotsa stuff that has Windows Installers, w32codecs, or win/.exe, but they better be your videos, and you better have allready placed a Copyrite on them, becuase once you use Microsoft/Apple Software to edit or even View it kinda legally becomes the property of the OS that is useing WIPO,DRM.
Akiga makes good stuff.

I think AVS Video Converter is perfect for portable devices owners. It has optimized presets for Archos, Apple iPod, Sony PSP, Creative Labs Zen Vision, Epson P-2000/P-4000, PDA and mobile phones: http://www.best-video-converter.com/avs-…
The program is very simple.
- install and run it
- open *.ifo or *.vob files from a DVD (*.ifo is preferable)
- click “To AVI”
- select an Archos profile from the list of profiles
- click “Convert Now”
