“critical System Errors”?

A few days ago my computer was running pretty slow so I was looking around for a way to clean it up and make it faster. (I don’t know too much about computers) I did some searches and I found something that I thought was going to be a free clean up or to at least check if it was my computer or the internet connection making my computer slow. I found this one program and started to download it and when I saw that it was going to charge me before it would do anything I canceled it. (I’ve been told before not to “buy” clean up programs off the internet). I ended up removing some programs that I didn’t use by myself. Yesterday everything was fine and then when I signed on today I got a pop up supposedly from Windows Defender saying that I had “Critical system errors” , I then got a pop up saying that I had trojans, worms etc..and that I needed to download the software immediately. I have Mcafee antivirus on my computer and I did a manual scan and it said there were no threats. I guess my question is what did i download on my computer and how do I get it off? I get a pop up about every 10 seconds, even if I click ignore. I have looked in my control panel for the program to remove it but I didn’t see anything. On my desktop it says “Personal antivirus” . Is this a Windows defender program? Do I need to remove Windows defender and if I do will it affect any of my other programs? Or do they just name it Windows defender to make me think that it is associated with Windows. (I have windows vista, don’t know if that matters, just want ot give as much info as possible.) Thank you to all who try to help!
