Can You Use An External Dvd Drive To Install New Software?

The DVD/CD drive on my laptop is broken. I am thinking about purchasing an external DVD drive. I use the DVD drive just to install software. Can I install software using an external DVD drive? A Dell salesman suggested that I purchase one but I have gotten bad advice from them before so I am not sure if they are giving me correct information. Thanks in advance.

I Need Help Quick ! Really Bad Internet Virus On My Computer !?

i have a really bad internet virus on my computer right now and the pop up from antivirus says it could be a password stealing attack, a trojan-dropper or similar. i think i got it from a porn site ( ha, i know better now)
but anyways, i really need help getting rid of it
all of the download virus removers only scan and tell you what viruses you have, they dont remove them for free though
i need this done fast because ive been trying to get rid of it for over and hour now and im scared of my computer getting messed up
does anybody know a COMPLETELY free software i can download quickly ?
also, some of the things ive tried downloading are being blocked from being downloaded because apparently theres a virus in them too
so i really need some help, 10 points to whoever tells me the software that works for me
i REALLY need help !
