My Dad’s computer acquired Total Security 2009 malware. It changed his screen background to a bogus blue screen that says “WARNING!” and such with grammar mistakes, as well as turned off the internet, de-activated AVG Free and installed itself instead. It’s popping up windows every couple seconds, asking to be purchased.
I tried going through these steps: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-total-security but got stuck on step 2 because the malware isn’t letting me install Process Explorer, or anything for that matter, because a bubble pops up and says “Application cannot be executed. The file mcrdsvc.exe is infected. Please activate your antivirus software”, and when I click on it, it takes me to the purchasing webpage.
How can I get rid of this?! Btw, my Dad’s OS is XP.
