    Hi L.
    Excellent question.
    Editing tools generally fall into three categories;
    1) Professional: This includes the Adobe toolset ($$$), Apple’s Final Cut ($$$$) and tools like Vegas ($$$)
    2) Consumer: This includes a lot of the commercial packages that help you put your vacation videos together . Ulead ($) Pinnacle ($) etc. In this category there are also ‘low end versions’ of both Adobe Premier (called ‘Elements) and Vegas.
    3) Free software: There are numerous free editing tools for video. If you are on a PC there are the following:
    Jahshaka
Jahshaka is a free multi-use offline editing tool. Although it is still fairly new on the market.
    T@B ZS4
T2B ZS4 is a free video editing and compositing tool from Zwei-Stein. Its not for everyone, but it could be for you.
    Wax
A free tool with powerful editing and compositing abilities.
    Video Spin
Video Spin is the free video editing tool from Avid/Pinnacle.
    Vivia
Vivia is a basic editing software which is currently being developed and is in Beta testing. If you are using Linux or Windows you might want to check this out
    Avidemux
One of the more stable and complete free tools available.
    Blender
Blender is a powerful, multi-use editing/compositing and modeling tool. It’s one of the best on the market and it’s free.
A lot of the ones above also run on the Mac and here is also Hyperengine-AV for the Mac which is very good.
A lot of people will tell you that free software is not good, and in some cases this is absolutely true, but with open source software such as Blender this is not the case. If you are just learning it might be worth getting a free tool to help you understand the basics and then move on after that.
Information about these and more can be found on my web site. Check my profile for that link
    Hope this helps
    Thanks… Freevideoman

if your going to spend your money on a mac, you might as well spend less (way less) and get either Adobe Premier Essentials of Vegas movie Studio both run around 100 dollars, and both are Farley widely used.
If you by a make, you will get BASIC editing software, not anything fancy, if you have Windows XP, or Vista, they both come with Windows Movie Maker, and it is also very BASIC. So you could start with WMM or pay up for something much better. I use Premier, but the Professionals (For instances, editor for the lord of the rings) use Adobe Premier Pro, CS3. This runs at about 1000 (still cheaper then getting a mac, and it doesn’t even come with the good software) and is amazing, you can download a trial, and it is awe inspiring. So that is my recommendations, have fun!
