I recently upgraded from Norton Antivirus 2005 and now I have Norton Internet Security 2006 on my pc with Windows 98 installed. Since the upgrade it takes at least 1000% longer in time to boot up and also to log on to the internet. I know of a free antivirus program from Avast.com and I think it may be better to replace the Norton with it. Has anyone had any experience with Avast? The Norton 2005 had less security features than the new 2006 program and now I believe my pc is overwhelmed even though I had enough capacity to load the 2006 software. My son has used Avast and he says it can’t hurt to try it. I’m a little leery and think since it is a free program that I might be inundated with all kinds of spam. Has any user of Avast out there had any security problem or dissatisfaction with Avast?

Norton sucks…..there have been major problems with both Norton 2005 and 2006 versions…our recommendation would be to totally remove the Nortons from your system. Steer clear of the free AV progs as these will not protect your pc properly.
Here in Australia we have always used and recommended the VET AntiVirus. The company that makes VET have just released the Etrust Internet Security Suite which contains the VET AV prog, email spam filter ,Zone Alarm Firewall and Pest Patrol spyware removal prog. The Etrust will consume less system resources than the Nortons will and will not slow down your pc
Buy a Mac and you won’t need any of that security crap.
I am not familiar with Avast, but I use ‘Antivir’ myself, which is also a free anti virus software (www.antivir.com), and a very good one. I would not be surprised if Avast will do a good job too. I have seen on more computers, even ones running Windows XP that Norton slows it down. Also don’t forget that Win 98 is outdated, and no longer supported by Microsoft. Depending on the configuration of your system, you could try to upgrade to windows XP, but if you system has a processor of 700MHz or less, I would not waste the $ on it, but get a new system all together. Norton IS 2006 and Win 98 are not a good mix.
i think you should check first your memory, then the program load in your computer, delete the cookies and clean up the Temporary Internet folder atleast a week, remove the unused programs, the more the programs the slower the PC you use, i used AVAST free version and its good…and theres also another free version of anti-virus like the free version of AVG Free Edition it is also nice….
I used Norton for a free trial and my PC worked fine. I bet what the real problem is actually is another program.
Hit cntrl+shift+escape to open the task manager and sort by cpu usage. Nothing besides system idle should be using more than 5% unless you specifically opened/ran it (like I.Explorer). Sort by mem usage and make sure you don’t have any processing heavy programs running in the backround too.
Welcome to using Norton!
