How Can I Figure Out How To “update” My Windows Xp?

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (bought in late ‘03) that has Windows XP. Just the other day, I recently had to run the “recovery” disc and start everything from “scratch” (some malware, etc). So, I got it “brand new” like it’s 2003 again.
I want to get i-Tunes 8, and the free version of AVG protection software online, etc … but they say I need the Windows XP Service 2 Pack. So I downloaded it, and tried to install it … I got the following message:
“The expected version of the product was not found on your system.”
… and they leave me hanging like that. I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?

You have to install service pack 1 first.
Then you can just go straight to service pack 3.
You can do all three but it will just waste you an hour.

remove what you downloaded and re-down load it and then try again
