I cannot get my computer to boot. I am using an HP desktop computer. I updated Windows, and then it said that the computer had to restart. So I restarted it; but now it won’t boot at all. It tries to boot; it shows the HP logo, the Windows XP logo, and then a black screen… and then these words show up:
“We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren’t sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally”
I have tried all of those things. When I try to use any of those three Safe Mode options, the screen is filled with line after line after line of text (is that supposed to happen?) and then I can’t do anything. I can’t type, the Enter key does nothing, and the only thing I can do is turn the computer off.
On the HP screen, I have these options on the bottom of the screen:
Esc = Boot
F1 = Setup
F10 = System Recovery
Would a System Recovery erase all of the files on my computer? If so, I don’t want to do that unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. I’d like to fix this while keeping my files and folders in tact.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem and get my computer to boot? Please help, I have run out of ideas!
