How To Know If The Data Im Downloading From The Net Has Virus In It??

hi pals.. i have mcafee antivirus.. it is ok.. which is the best antivirus software?? i dont want to invest on it… can i get a good antivirus somewhere for free?? and how can i know that the data im downloading from the net contains virus before it downloads completely….???
