Do You Absolutely Have To Install And Have Anti-virus Software?

I have gone a long time without it and my computer runs the same way and what not. I was wondering if you really need anti-virus software because to my understanding it is virtually impossible to keep up with the production of new viruses, which would make the anti-virus software obsolete.

The “obsolete” argument is why it is important to get updates, as all a-v software is set to get, automatically. Additionally, they use what are known as “heuristics,” which is a technique allowing them to identify an otherwise unrecognized process as a virus, even if it doesn’t match a particular definition.
Given that you can get antivirus and antispyware protection for free (http://www.download.com for AntiVir and Windows Defender), there really isn’t a good reason in my book for not using them.

For most ordinary users antivirus protection is a must. Because people tend to behave carelessly about browsing, downloading, installing screensavers etc. and that stuff. Peer-2-peer networks, cracked software, that all make up a huge risk.
Of course if you really know what is being done on your PC and you’re absolutely sure that other users are savvy enough, then there’s a good chance you can go without AV.

if your really internet savvy and you can distinguish good from bad then you do not need one. I have no anti-virus, and every program, game, movie, song on my computer is illegally downloaded. I have never had a virus
