If there is a gap in the open source software world for a particular application/system, is it generally possible to find companies/public organisations to help fund the creation of that project if someone is willing to coordinate / manage the project? Does anyone have any examples of projects initiated in this way? I’m thinking of a scale of project larger than a Google summer of code.

I love being around cars and know a bit about them, but I want to know more. I’m going to take classes starting next year, but I want to learn about cam sizes, overlap, compression ratio, 10-12 bolt rear ends, rear end ratio, domed piston heads, the works. Everything I just listed I understand for the most part but it’s hard to learn some of this stuff by word of mouth…I need some tools such as a book or even better interactive software. I understand the basics of how an engine works, I just want to learn more…I’m buying a 1976 trans am and I want something that will give me the knowledge on how to literally disassemble this thing and rebuild it…suggestions?

Ive downloaded the Zune software onto both my latop & computer (yes I know on the website there are 2 types of software & i downloaded the right ones) but the software opens but it wont acknowledge my zune player is attached. Nothing s wrong with my computer or laptop because I can download things onto my ipod but I want music on my zune! how do I do that?! : )
