Free Antivirus Download?

I am lookin for a free to download antivirus / malware programme
I currently use AVG Free 8.5 but it always brings a pop-up saying malicious file found and when I click “heal” it says the file cannot be found
Is there any other good ones I can use to fully protect my laptop (on Vista) that are free to download?
Also, I am not sure what the difference is between virus software, malware, etc so I am not sure what one(s) iactually need?
Cheers in advance x

Avast! Home Edition is very good – it offers pretty much everything a commercial AV does and it’s detection rates are not too shabby either (to say the least).http://www.avast.com/
Avira AntiVir Personal is very good also.http://www.free-av.com/
Of course, before installing a new anti-virus, remember to uninstall AVG first. Never install two anti-virus programs at the same time – they may conflict with each other. If AVG will not uninstall properly, try using the AVG removal tool: http://www.avg.com/download-tools
Basically, the term “malware” is composed from the words “malicious” and “software” – so it is a general term for any virus, trojan, worm, spyware, rootkit, etc. Any good AV should protect you from all types of malware (which doesn’t mean *all* malware, only *all-types* of malware – no AV is 100%).
That being said, although popular, AVG Free isn’t that crash-hot; it includes no anti-rootkit.
Install Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware to perform periodical scans with to ensure nothing slips past whichever AV you do choose (Avast or Avira). Neither MBAM nor SAS offer real-time protection (which means they won’t protect you from becoming infected) but do include full scan and removal capabilities. Since neither offer real-time protection, it is safe to install both along with Avast or Avira.

Befor you uninstall AVG,you’ll need to disable it. you go to the AVG icon in the tool tray, right click and choose exit. Then you can begin to uninstall. If you don’t do this first, then there will be active files/folders left from AVG and you won’t be able to install another anti-virus.
The top 3 and free are:
    avast! Home Edition 4.8
    Avira AntiVir
AVG 8.5 (but you don’t want this)
Depending on your PC skills avast! is intricate and takes time to install, setup and register and learn. If your after something easier but has that best detection rate then choose Avira but it has a nag screen which can be a little annoying but like I said,it’s detection is tops.
These programs are free for personal use at CNET http://www.downloads.com

I like FREE Avira Anti Virus. According to a recent article in PC World magazine, Avira was number one in catching “bad guys.”
I have been using it for years and like it a lot.
If you decide to get it (or any other) do not use AVG at the same time. NEVER use more than one anti virus software at the same time.
Download it here, if you want: http://www.free-av.com/en/products/index…

If you insist on using an anti-virus program, take a look at avast! Home Edition, which is free.
