I Have A Problem When I Start My Computer. I Get An Error Message That Says: ?

non-system disk or disk error
replace and strike any key when ready_
I am really worried that I have a faulty hard drive. I have been reading about this error message all morning on the internet and I know that the simple solution is that I may have a floppy or cd in a drive. I do not. So I am worried now because I do not know anything about solving computer issues. Even as I am reading some of the help sites, i don’t understand some of the simple IT lingo. I am living abroad in Europe until July and do not have any of my recovery software or reboot disks with me (they are all at home in the US). My PC was working fine while I was at home and then when I got here it worked normal for a while. Last night I turned it off and cannot get it on past this error message today. To buy a new hard drive is expensive right? but then I dont even know how to install it or anything. Will I lose everything that is on my PC (emails in outlook, pictures, documents, etc)?? Can someone please give me any simple solutions?? I really do not know where to go here in Europe for tech support or who to ask about helping for the IT stuff here. PLEASE HELP…musch appreciated, Thanks :x

    CAUSE:
This issue may occur if your start device (such as a floppy disk drive, hard disk drive, or CD-ROM drive) does not contain boot files.
    RESOLUTION:
To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods, and then restart your computer:
    * Remove the non-system disk from your boot device. For example, remove the non-system disk from the floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive.
    * Change your computer’s boot sequence. To do this, you must change your computer’s setup and the option that controls which device your computer uses to start from. Make sure that you select a device that has boot files (or operating system files) installed.
    * If you start your computer from a hard disk drive, install a bootable operating system (such as Windows XP) on the drive.

if that is a PC as you say, and not a laptop, then the easiest way out would be to take it’s hard disk out and attach it to a friends computer as a slave disk to see if it works there, and that way you will be able to recover all of your data from it

  3. Yggdrasi says:

Change the boot disk setup in your BIOS so that the system is booting from the disk with the OS loaded on it.

  4. monkey12 says:

go into safe mode (press F8 on start up)
    choose last good known state

  5. litl_man says:

Non-System Disk or Disk Error results when the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) cannot find the boot sector or the master boot record is missing or damaged; i.e. the device does not have bootable media. The BIOS searches drives in the order usually specified in the CMOS Setup. Some causes for the error message coming up are:
No bootable partition on a hard disk drive
    A defective hard disk drive
The CMOS drive settings (parameters) are not correct for the boot device
    A virus
The cost of hard drives all depends on the size you want to get. You could easily buy a 250GB hard drive online at http://www.newegg.com for 54.99. Once you have purchased the hard drive you can transfer the information from one hard drive to the other by using the computer.

in all probability your battery from the mainboard is without enough current, hopefully you can get in the BIOS from the mainboard with the F2 button (function key at the top, from the key board) press this key when the laptop/pc is starting up. Only look for the starting order and be sure it’s the hard drive. After changing be sure you save the settings. When this isn’t the case, you don’t have to lose all information from the harddisk, the only thing you need is someone with the same OS beware it must be in the same language let’s presume you have XP
