Are you sure it's not something like placing your tower next to a home stereo speaker? Unreadable HD is hardware failure, not really anything most viruses will do. Especially twice.

Firefox is actually a much safer browser than Internet Explorer. There are some long and complicated reasons for it, but just take my word!
Unless you downloaded a file in Firefox and ran it, it there is no chance that you got a virus from Firefox.
It's hard to imagine what could have happened with your drives - I've never heard of a problem like this. If the drives were very old they could have just packed in. But if they are less than ~4 years old, it is very unlikely.
You need to carry out an integrity check of the drives before you try formatting again. These types of checks are usually included with Hard drive software.
If the drives are using USB connections it is likely to be the USB that is malfunctioning - if so it has nothing to do with the drives.
When USB drives malfunction, you can actually open them up and take out the drive from inside. You can then connect the drive to your motherboard inside the computer by using the SCSI or SATA connection that you find inside the drive. (the USB part is just "a shell").

No a browser can't destroy, or even affect your HD. It is NOT firefox, could be anything else. Maybe virus is there in your flash or somewhere else. My advise is not to throw away those hard drives, instead put em in someone else's computer. Check if it works and DOn"T OPEN THE DrIVES!! If it does then just right click and click at format for each drive. Post the question again writing in your symptoms more clearly. Because I know for sure it is not firefox.

The problem is not just with your browser, your partition table is screw up that is just it.... And I can assure you that you hard disks are still working fine. Just mount it on another computer and run chkdsk with /f option. You File Allocation Table and other clusters will be repaired. mount your computer again and you will find your OS and your hard disk working fine again.
But back to your question if Firefox can be affected by some vulnerabilty of threat? The answer is a sure yes but every browser and software are working towards protecting themselves, so download updates regularly for your system and software.
Finally just do what I wrote above, you can achieve the same through using bootable CD, boot to the console and run the chkdsk command.
Good luck to you
