I’ll install it
typically the routers and servers used do have preinstalled firewalls on them. However these aren’t always up to scratch. I have one on mine and it still lets through unwanted viruses, trojans and files.
I don’t want to get into a war of brands here, but Norton (Symantec) aren’t very secure. For a start most viruses these days piggyback off of other viruses designed to destroy Norton. So that’s a no no. Also Mcafee are pretty much in the same boat. The bigger the name the more viruses there are out there designed to destroy them.
I use Windows Live Onecare. Relatively cheap, blends in with my windows operating system well, and I can install up to 3 computers on my account. You could let the other people in your dorm use it and then get some money back off them for cheap booze or whatever you uni types do these days. Crazy kids!
The craziest thing you’ll hear on this site – and from me, no less – is that it’s safer to not have any internet security and just use window’s built in one than to use most of the ones on the market. This is because viruses seak and destroy in most cases. But if you don’t have a big warm spot called Norton on your jetplane, the missile won’t hit.
I recommend Panda or Windows Live Onecare. But don’t just rely on the uni’s firewall. It’s more than likely useless
Their internet will probably have a pretty robust firewall, but will offer no protection against viruses etc and likely no protection against other students, who are all INSIDE the firewall and whom you probably cannot trust to be entirely hacker free.
So yes, yes, yes.
always good to have some sort of firewall installed locally on your machine.
I recommend zone alarm or commodo.
Antivirus is also a must. Try avg or avast,
There’s no need to pay for security software – the free stuff is just as good.
yes, windows firewall is a start. followed by virus protection. avast is great and free. followed by spy-ware download spy-bot, its free
The Internet might be protected but your PC will not. Get Avast!
Yes, thats where all the viruses come from
