Antivirus Prohibits Internet Access?

My computer stopped allowing access to the internet through Internet Explorer (Firefox too) no matter what I did. I found that if i closed down my Avast free antivirus software that i could access fine. figured it was corrupt, i uninstalled it and installed AVG free instead. got that all downloaded and running and bam…no internet. tried all kinds of things, nothing worked. i uninstalled AVG free…and here i am, writing this note. So, it seems when i run a computer protection program i lose my internet access. any idea why and how i can remedy this serious problem.
