How Do I Completely Restore A Dell Computer?

My friend has a Dell computer that is three years old, and I’m sure it has Windows XP. It continues to give a large variety of error messages and cannot properly connect to the internet. It basically freezes up. The local cable rep checked the line and modem and they are fine. Since there is nothing of value stored on the computer (like tax documents etc), my thinking is to just restore the thing to original factory settings, and if that doesn’t work to take it to a shop. My friend has no set of recovery disks. I have done this with my HP computer, but that is because I downloaded a set of recovery disks from the HP website. I looked at the Dell site and can’t see how to do something similar. So how can I restore my friend’s computer to original factory settings, or where can I go to find out how to do this? The model is DMC. There are several disks that have things such as software settings, etc. but nothing that clearly states recovery disks. Thank you in advance!

Actually, to access the PC Restore function on Dell computers that were shipped as of 07/15/2004 on later, you could reboot the computer, and hold down CTRL and tap F11 as it’s booting up, NOT F12 (F12 accesses the boot device menu, if you’re looking at booting to either diagnostics, or a CD that’s inserted)

You power it off and then power it on again. When the blue bar at the top of the screen appears(for a split second) you hit the
F12 button. Then just follow the directions.

Some dell systems have a recovery partition on the hard drive. You usually get to the recovery program by pressing the F12 key during boot-up right after you see the Dell logo. Try that. if that’s doesn’t work you can do 1 of 2 things:
    1. Call Dell and ask for the restore CD’s. You will have to pay a fee, I think it’s about $10.
    2. If the computer has the windows COA sticker on it. Get a install CD for Windows XP, install off of the CD and when it asks you for the key, type in the key off of the COA.
    Good luck.
