I had to re-load (from disk) my yahoo software, and now I cannot locate the antivirus that ws running before. I was sure this was part of my Yahoo package… it was the CA E-Trust something or other.. where can I get it back without having to purchase a new copy?

My friend’s hard drive recently failed to continue reading and has had to opt for the option of handing it to a data recovery firm since this is the only way he can get it replaced (Western Digital have specified partners they work with – other companies that work on the drive will result in the warrant becoming void). Anyway, he has a few bits of illegal software, videos etc. Is it likely the data recovery company will hand it over to the officials or can he safely trust them to ignore it? He’s from the UK by the way, as am I.

Another user on a different account on my computer keeps on downloading software onto the computer without permission. I am running Windows XP home edition and want to know how to block any unauthorised downloads. This other user does not have administrator rights.

Like many other software professionals, I have been focusing on a fairly narrow area of the software world . Personally, I’ve been working with C++ and web based operational challenges. I would very much like to keep apprised of other technologies that are making great progress, some that come to mind are Programming languages (Java, .Net, Ruby, Flash), Web operations and supporting HW, Network technologies and so on.
One way to do that is to just learn from area focused books, but that would be extremely time consuming and what I’m looking for is more a long the lines of: high level overviews of what’s out there, strength/weaknesses, comparisons and what’s used and where.
Are there any books, online classes, magazines, web sites, or blogs that would be targetting this sort of knowledge? I realize that it’s a moving target, but what isn’t in this field?
