Do you mean a new hard drive, as in replaced the original hard drive, or a second hard drive, so you have two now?
The model numbers shouldn't make a difference and if you're booting from a cd, the hard drive that's in it shouldn't make any difference. Are you sure you're booting from the cd and not trying to boot from the hard drive?
If you're in the BIOS, make sure that your cd drive is selected as the first boot device.

then boot from the cd and when running the recovery cds partition your hard drive and reinstall windows

Dear Sis,
In your old HP HDD, there were 'ghost files' which are always going to be there... no matter if you do a system restore. These allow for only the origional system restore discs to work. So for example this is why you cant buy a new system and use its discs on an older system.
Since you have had a new HDD... you're going to need what's called an OEM Windows disce... Origional Equipment Manufacturer's Disc. This is for people who are free of the ghost files, but generally is more expensive, and has a limited number of activations.
The WDC is the Western Digital Caviar... the other is from the same brand Western Digital, and no it does not matter. Here is what you want:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...
or if you want XP just search for it in the search box.
Hope this helped

HP offers free E-mail and Live Chat support.
I would recommend going to them to see their advice. Look on this page and select either e-mail or live chat option. Be prepared to give model number and perhaps serial number of computer needing fixed. Good Luck.
