The last laptop I bought before my new one came with recovery discs. One of the discs would erase the hard drive and the other one would re-install all of the pre-installed software to an “out of the box” original state when I bought it. My new laptop does not have any recovery discs. I have discovered most do not come with recovery discs. Here is my question. Can I make my own recovery discs and if so how? The back up program which came with my Windows Vista states it will back up all files EXCEPT program files, so that will not help restore the system if it crashes. I realize it is a remote possibility while it is in warranty (one year) but what about after that? Your comments are appreciated. Thanks

You don’t mention what brand of laptop you have so I can’t be specific. Have you thought of cloning your hard drive to an external hard drive?
That way you can just copy the hard drive backup to your laptop nad not have to reinstall all the programs and updates.
Here’s an article with some free cloning tools:http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-c…
Check your user guide how to do it.
Your computer comes with manufacturer’s utility (not windows one) to create your own recovery disks.
There is a good chance shortcut for it is right on your desktop.
If your system did die, the computer came with all the discs with software, the OS, and everything else that came with it. Your recovery discs just squeeze all that stuff on two discs. When it says it will restore your programs, it means only those that came with it, which is basically what the Vista ones will do, except that you need more than one disc. Can you make your own? Not really, other than copying every single thing on the hard drive to a dvd, cd , or flash drive. Then if your computer dies, you can reinstall and then drag everything back onto the new drive.
For just programs, copy C:/Program Files but be sure to get C:/Windows too because there are drivers and ‘dll’ files some programs need. When you do this, be warned that some programs may not work and they will not appear in Add or Remove Programs
For just documents, copy C:/Documents and Settings. There are also online sites, such as Mozy [mozy.com] that will save a copy of your files as well, up to 2 gigs worth
